Below: Cambry at the parade

Summer finally arrived and not a day too late. This week started out still unseasonably cool, but the weather heated up in a hurry this weekend. Parker went to cub scout day camp on Thursday. He was dressed and done with his chores by 8:30 and was counting down the time for departure: only 3 hours, 55 minutes.

Riley began band camp and is having a great time with the trumpet and learning from Mr. Halverson, the excellent band director at his Jr. high school. Riley had been working extra hard to play a G and felt pretty confident he could do it Thursday morning so I expected him to come home all proud and accomplished. When I asked how camp was, Riley said, "humiliating." Halverson had asked for a volunteer for a two bar solo and Riley was chosen. When it came time for Riley's solo, he flubbed it up and couldn't play anything. "Keep moving forward!"
Orem held their annual summerfest this weekend which is a great community celebration in our city park with free entertainment, carnival rides and games, a parade, and fireworks! We went over Friday evening and stood in line a lot to ride a little. But they did get on the ferris wheel!
Walking home from the park Friday night, Leadelle caught up with her friend Michelle Brockbank who gave Cambry and Leadelle a ride the last bit home and they sat out in the car talking and laughing irreverently until quite late (Cambry gave up much earlier). Leadelle perhaps doesn't plan enough friend time, but it's rare she declines the chance to visit and laugh with friends once it arises.

Saturday we headed out early down to Manti (1.5 hour drive) for a mini Kjar (Leadelle's maternal side) reunion. We worked in Grandma's yard for a few hours and then we went over to Curt (Leadelle's mom's twin brother) and Becky's for a bar-b-que. What an enjoyable time to reunite and reacquaint so many remarkable people. All the way home Leadelle was telling the kids how fortunate they were to be born into such a great bunch.

Sitting in the shade in Curt's back yard, we couldn't help but feel a little sentimental because last summer this gathering turned out to be our send off for Grandpa who died unexpectedly the next day.

We stopped on the way home to take the kids to the Manti temple where Dave and Leadelle were married almost 17 yeas ago. The children were so sweet and reverent and Aleah wanted to go inside "Mommy and Daddy's castle."

We came home from the trip down south to pull things together for Sunday and head out to the parade and more carnival rides. Summer always feels official once we've celebrated Summerfest. The weather cooperated and took us up near 100 today. I love summer!

A well-earned rest for Dave and Elise
