April 12, 2015

Dear Riley,

Thank goodness for Spring Break! I feel played out and ready for a new push to the finish of school.

It’s fast Sunday, we have our Parish family dinner this evening, and I have visiting teaching this afternoon, so it will be a full day. I got up early to make bread for the dinner tonight and I’m trying to write you a letter before I’m exhausted so it will be uplifting. ;)

GB had her surgery this week. We feel just terrible for the results: her last surgeon left a large piece of broken bone in her hip socket, like the size of a small mouth canning lid with some thickness to it. The bone was pushing the ball out of socket routinely and was making her fall. The new surgeon said that he’s never seen something so severe and longstanding, noting that most people wouldn’t put up with it so long. Her body had tried to secure the floating bone with new bone growth which grew through her ligaments. She had complained constantly to her previous surgeon, but he insisted the surgery had been a success and kept telling her it would get better. She had to go to the ER a few weeks ago because the she fell and heard an audible pop in her hip. Crazy, huh?

And GP is still sick. He went to a different pulmonologist this week who is testing for Valley Fever several different ways. The tragedy here is that the condition has gone from acute to chronic WHILE G has been trying to get help. It just makes you feel at the mercy of your provider.

The beginning of this week was slow. I was too worn out to play. I worked in the garage some, filed taxes, and took care of work the first few days. We decided Wednesday to play Thursday and Friday.

Thursday Dad had to run into work for a couple hours and then we left about noon. We grabbed Subway sandwiches and hiked the Y. Josie walked every step like a super hiker! She was scared walking up the mountain, crouching in a way you would if you pretended to be an elephant. If the ground was uneven, her crouch would slow and she’d want to hold hands. Just when she was tiring to the point I thought we’d have to carry her, we could see the Y from the turn and the sight propelled her to the finish. At the top, she almost finished her 6” sub, impressive!

We touched base at home for just a minute after the hike before heading to Hangtime. Parker and Aleah had gone with friends Monday and were raring to go again. Josie showed no signs of fatigue and actually a great deal of aggressiveness as she jumped in the toddler section with exercise balls, trampoline slides, and then into the big foam pits. These were her favorites.

We were tired by the time we got home for dinner. After putting Josie to bed, we watched The Giver. It was a good movie, though they had to expand and adjust the story for the movie.

Friday morning we went ice skating. We were sore and tired, but Josie was most enthusiastic and wanted to stay much longer than everyone else. She was in heaven. We took a picnic lunch to the park on Provo Center Street and then headed up to Trafalga in Lehi. They have added a lot of carnival rides, had some blow-ups and a petting zoo. Heaven again. But Josie was starting to show fatigue. The girls rode the bumper boats with Aleah as captain. There was almost mutiny as she steered them twice through the spouts on the far side of the ring. A man made Aleah and Josie balloon animals. We ended with laser tag. I was too tired to play.

After a quick dinner, Elise and Aleah went to babysit, Cambry was out with H, Dad and Parker watch the last Hobbit movie, and I puttered around pulling things back together. We wore ourselves out playing, but it was a good tired.

Cambry is doing well.  She is curious about her guy, but not worried at all about finding him. She’s about to begin finals again. She is almost done with her bachelor’s degree at BYU.

As I have watched things and looked at pictures on the Thailand facebook page, it occurs to me that part of your mission is strengthening the members. The Church is quite young there and yet they qualify for a temple. Isn’t that amazing? You will come home with an expanded vision of the pioneer legacy.

Wasn’t conference so good? I suppose you heard it in Thai rather than English. Could you catch most of it?

It’s transfer meeting this week (and you’d better get your birthday package!). From what you said last time, I take it you’ll be at the meeting. Love your companion and serve him extra well while you have the opportunity. Love people well every chance you get because always in life, chances are fleeting.

I love you,
Mom
