From Mom March 6, 2016

Wednesday March 2, 2016

I’ve been so tired when I’ve written lately, I’m afraid my letters leave out a lot of good things.  Here are some:

Elise auditioned for and made the highest choir for next year.  She is excited and will sing alto.  Elise applied for a couple honors classes.  She got into science and math, but sadly, she didn’t get English.

When Grandma B was talking to Josie last week before we left for the temple, Josie said, “Grandma, C should be here soon.  I’ve been waiting for him all day.”

Monday night FHE went a little late because it took a while to make Gru.  We were playing Uno around 8:30. Had I noticed Josie was on her last card I totally would have thrown the game.  But since I didn’t, I put down my last card winning the round.  Josie got so upset, “Why did you do that?  I was going to win!” and she stomped up to her room to wail and mourn.  Later after a quick bath, Josie put her hands on her clean, still naked hips and said, “About you winning and EVERYONE ELSE losing, I’m not comfortable with that!”

Yesterday afternoon Cambry and C went ring shopping. (YAY)  As we were eating our dinner after their return, Josie asked, “C, are you really going to marry my sister?”  C gave a consulting look at Cambry and they nodded in unison.  We’re planning a June 3 wedding.  :)

It took most of the day Monday to get the van posted on KSL.  I don’t know why.  I listed it for $1450 to give myself some wiggle room for negotiation.  But the truth is, I didn’t want a lot of money for the car.  I just wanted whoever bought it to invest enough to appreciate the car. In my prayers yesterday morning, I asked Father to send the family who could be blessed by that van.   I got a call yesterday asking to come see it immediately.  A young family, who looked like they were working hard but just scraping by, unloaded and my heart was immediately drawn to the mother, large pregnant with her fourth baby. They were willing to pay my asking price, but had to wait for Friday’s payday to come up with the last $250.  I told Dad that I thought I should just give them the car for the $1200 they had and he of course agreed.  I sent a text that afternoon and they came right over and picked up the car.  I told the woman about my prayer and that I had the impression to let them have the car for what they had now.  Later than night I got a couple of texts saying thank you.  I feel good and happy for them.  He can fix the car which is the only way it makes sense to have an older car.

Late last night Parker headed out saying he was going for a run.  I gave him a knowing look and asked, “Are you sure you’re not going to meet someone?”  About 30 minutes later I answered his confession call.  A friend was in a severe struggle and Parker felt he had to get to the friend, and then felt bad about lying to us.  This is  a big step toward growing up.

Parker also spent a good deal of time with D making a video for a scholarship competition discouraging texting while driving.  They had a good time and made a cute video starring Parker.  Curiosity killed the cat.  You can imagine.

Thursday and Friday were largely taken up with wedding stuff.  I toured four different venues for the wedding reception.  Ultimately I chose the one down in the Riverwoods across from Tucanos.  Cambry has always wanted an outdoor wedding reception.  By all counts this will be an exceptionally large wedding.  There is no way to use Grandma’s yard and park all those cars. I’m especially concerned about the older people in the ward walking a long way.  Anyway I just felt good about The Manor and better than I had at the other places that could have worked.  We’ll have to decorate to bring the English garden feeling onto the space, but Cambry’s good with it.

Friday night Dad and I went to see a movie in the Riverwoods and biked there.  We got our bike back from the shop and it rides so nice!  I can’t wait to take a long ride and really give it a go.  Our movie was sweet but had a love scene.  There is irony here.  Dad suggested a movie based on one person’s recommendation and I was NOT going to take their recommendation because last time I did there was this offensive-to-me love scene in it.  I suggested the movie we saw based on several raving recommendations.  I think all my absence from media makes me more sensitive than most.  After our show, we biked up to Wendy’s for lemonade and french fries.  It really was a fun date.

The girls had piano festival yesterday.  Elise played Hayden’s Sonatina #8 in G major and William Joseph’s Heroes, shortened by three pages.  She played well, but had to use her music for the last one as she hasn’t been working on it quite long enough to get it memorized.  Aleah played Once Upon a Dream from Sleeping Beauty and Mozart’s Minueto in C major. Aleah didn’t perform very well and was quite disappointed for an hour or two yesterday.  Sometimes you learn more from the flops than you do from the successes.

The kids are off school tomorrow.  But it’s raining today and should rain tomorrow as well.  I’ll take the break though, don’t get me wrong.

I’m too occupied with wedding things already.  I have decided to do more than I thought I would.  The expense of catering is really discouraging.  Plus I can do so much more with so much less.  Twelve weeks plus a little.  By the way, no he hasn’t proposed.  But the ring is purchased (it takes a couple weeks to receive) and the venue and temple are booked for June 3.  This is what I call the unofficially engaged stage.  I’m pleased; they really make a nice pair.

News items I’ve forgotten to share:  Mr. L at Cascade was still cleaning the school after retirement.  A couple weeks ago he wasn’t feeling right and went to the doctor.  He was diagnosed with cancer which had metastasized and 16 days later passed away.  He was just 64 like Bro M.  Also Bro M had a new tumor removed earlier in the school year and has another one.  Parker fasted for him today. Also an older F boy was doing a trick on a snowboard and landed wrong and though he had a helmet on, nearly died from a traumatic brain injury. He's still in a coma and is struggling through. It's a miracle he's still alive.

Sis R's son who served in Thailand came and found me after church today to talk about you and your mission.  It was very nice to have that time.  He loved Chiang Mai, asked if you had hit the night bazaar to find yet.  He spent six months up there.  He also went up to Chain Ria.  It made you feel a little closer today.

I will send your birthday package this week. Do you need more toothpaste or will you before you get home?  Is there anything particular you would like to receive from home (of course all the pictures I’m behind printing and mailing, but besides them)?

I had a sweet thought today.  Josie was looking through her gospel art pictures and asked about the one with Jesus on the boat and the nets being filled.  The Spirit reminded me that we can be busy and engaged working for a worthy goal without any results.  But when we do as instructed by God, with minimal effort, we can have overwhelming rewards.  What a good missionary reminder.

I love you so much!  Take care.

Love,
Mom

She made this on her birthday date with Grandma and Grandpa P.
