Re:  Letter 23 of 3

Dear Riley:

Boy am I tired!  After going to bed at midnight, today started at 4:30 AM.  For Mother’s Day, your Mom wanted omelets with caramelized onions and mushrooms, and fried potatoes on the side.  This took a lot of prep work by way of chopping and browning, and it needed to be done in small batches in order to brown properly.  It was delicious, but I found I barely had enough time to eat and get out the door for my morning bishopric meeting and Sacrament meeting prep.  Sunday morning there is always a flurry of activity and today was a little more intense than usual.  I was a little nervous by the time the meeting was getting underway because I hadn’t taken time to go to the restroom and wasn’t entirely confident my system would cooperate.  Fortunately I made it.  The meeting was a nice tribute to mothers and those with mother hearts who bless our lives.  Priesthood was also a spiritual high note.  Both B and B Y advanced in the Aaronic Priesthood.  B was ordained a Teacher and B a Priest.  Parker was inspired to suggest that B be ordained first.  This way he could stand in the circle when B was ordained to the office of Teacher.  The Spirit was so strong and afterward I felt to take a few minutes to expound on what it meant to be part of a priesthood quorum.  TA and ED taught the lesson and did a masterful job.  Following church, CB had the Aaronic Priesthood conferred upon him and was ordained a Deacon. Once again, the Spirit was very strong.  It’s great to see young men growing up and progressing in the gospel.

We just got up from a dinner of spring mix salad greens, pan browned Brussels sprouts (the best way to eat them), Trisha’s rice, and grilled Salmon.  We had homemade Strawberry cheesecake for dessert, which was amazing.  I can’t honestly say this was all prepared with singleness of heart, but it WAS done with love.  I’m stuffed, and miss you every time we have a feast like this.  Luckily we get to share some aspect of the day with our missionary.  We’re anxiously awaiting your Skype call.  One of us is so worked up over your pending call, she’s tied up in knots and feels like she’s going to throw up!  Ha ha…only a mother.

Today was the first sunny day in several days.  It’s been raining day and night.  I don’t know how much water fell, but the cumulative must be in the inches.  The snails are having a party in the flowerbeds and I seem to have lost this round.  This weekend is forecast to be much the same as last.  Maybe I’ll get the garden in before the next wave of storms hits.  Everything is lush, green, and soggy except my lettuce starts, much of which succumbed to the deluge and drowned.
In spite of the rain and the hectic pace of May, I took Wednesday and Thursday off to go on a Lake Powell kayak trip.  The rest of the group stayed till Saturday, but I couldn’t swing a trip that long.  It was beautiful and restorative.  Jared was good enough to let me borrow his equipment.  There’s something magical about getting up and paddling across water as still and smooth as glass in the early hours of the morning.  This was such a contrast to the violent winds from the night before which surly would have taken my tent had I not been inside  Quite a compelling pastime…  Anyway, it’s something I think you’d enjoy.

It’s hard to believe you’re nearly six months into your mission.  My letter was interrupted by your Skype call which was wonderful.  Your Mom is considerably calmed down now and watching the recorded call again as I type.  We sure love you and are so blessed by your service.  Thank you for being an obedient and diligent missionary.  I better get this into the email.  I may have already missed it.

Love,
Dad
